Old Friends and Technology: A Perfect Combination

I am just finishing a long-weekend in the Boston area with three dear friends.  We decided that an Air B and B would be a more appropriate venue for us to relax and catch-up on what’s been happening in our lives. And it was.  We stayed in a charming, centrally-located home in Quincy, which had all the amenities we needed, including views, great places to walk and a corkscrew. The only thing it did not have was a bedroom for each of us.  This was a problem.

As we have been friends for a very long time, we had a frank conversation upon arrival about each of our nighttime noises, i.e., our snoring. As two of our friends had shared rooms during work-related meetings, one described the other’s sounds as “melodious and comforting.”  She also noted, with great enthusiasm, that there was a rain App that, should any of our nighttime noises be a problem, we could just put on the gentle sound of rain falling, and all our problems would be solved. With all this information, I decided to go with the “melodious and comforting” and the sounds of a summer rainfall.

After three days, all I can say is fortunately, I don’t require a lot of sleep. I woke up on the first night, to a sound that was a far cry from melodious.  I tried the pillow over my head for a few minutes but then decided to go the nature route. I put on the App and initially it was soothing but as the snoring became louder, the pitter-patter just wasn’t doing the trick.  I began to increase the volume to a point that it sounded like a tsunami was coming through the bedroom! I finally fell back to sleep with my phone-and the tsunami—right next to my ear.

Unbeknownst to me, my “melodious and comforting” friend thought that we were having a terrible rainstorm and struggled as to whether or not she should run around and shut all the windows!

Next time, I think we’ll pan the App and look for a place with four bedrooms.
